Kottke had a "oops you weren't here" experience with UPS last week while waiting for his copy of Harry Potter. In fact, it sounds like a lot of people had this problem. What happens, and I said happens because it's happened to me more than a few times with non-Potter shipping, is that the UPS diver simply cannot make all of his or her deliveries, and marks your package "attempted delivery" in spite of the fact that they did not attempt delivery. It's awful because if you've, say, taken time off or left work early or are working from home in order to be available for the delivery, you are supposed to do it again tomorrow while you wait for them to re-attempt. And good luck getting someone to hold the package for you at the service center for pick-up. Admittedly, it's happened to me more often with DHL than with UPS, but it's happened with both. Honestly, I don't trust anyone but FedEx for these kinds of shenanigans. I suspect UPS' internal requirements only demand drivers to make delivery to businesses, giving private residence addresses a lower priority. Regardless, at work I don't give my business to anyone but FedEx.

Via curbed, an amazing panoramic view of San Francisco, taken from atop the Bay Bridge in 1971. I wish someone would put this on Flickr and annotate it with the best "then and now" callouts, but even without knowing the finer details (for those of this whom this image pre-dates), it's pretty incredible. I'd say, even with the sterile commercialization that has happened in the Mission Bay area, the current waterfront is a marked improvement over the former.

I just had a weird interface moment with my iPhone. I was listening to music on it and doing something else. I had paused the music for something and went to turn it back on. For a brief second, I blanked. I was looking (subconsciously) for a button. For just a quick second, the screen was just that — a screen.
