speaking of earlimart, if you're in san francisco on friday, you can check them out at the independent. i highly recommend, though i'll be in minneapolis friday night, so you wont find me there. i might well be seeing john vanderslice at that same time. we'll have to compare notes.

now that she has a child living in san francisco and a child living in los angeles, this kind of thing just scares the hell out of my mother. did anyone feel it here? apparently it made a big impression in fresno, but i didn't notice a thing.

in my dream last night, jessie and i were living in very-south florida, hanging around with elian gonzalez, who had grown in a very handsome young gay man, i might add. a mutual american friend walked past us on the way to the bus stop, dejected by his recent breakup with his pretty cuban girlfriend. as he arrived at the curbside, the bus pulled up and he pulled out a large knife and stabbed himself repeatedly, disappearing in a nightmarish fountain of blood.

this is, for the record, the second nightmarish fountain of blood dream i have had this week. not that i'm counting.

now comes the part of the day when i needlessly chastise those near and dear to me about getting their technophobic asses into gear. the following people, who ought all to know better and from whom i will tolerate no excuses, need to go out and get an rss/atom feed right now. do it nerds!

amy sedaris gives away vicodin in pez dispenses and talks to the chronicle. did you know they were making a strangers with candy movie? IMDB doesn't have a release date, but i'm sure you'll hear more about this in the future. thanks, jessie!

something very special is happening this week. on tuesday, the new album from earlimart is coming out. (of course, it's already available to buy from itunes for those who are interested, or on pre-order from insound). allow me to preface: i've seen earlimart play in san francisco a few times now, and each time they've been progressively better than before. i mean, you could just tell that these guys where headed towards somewhere with this. i saw them play the independent, and there was this weird edge, a kind of visceral thrill, and they were throwing off this vibe like the whole band had just had a screaming match backstage. the music they played that night felt disorienting and rough, much more powerful (and loose) than anything i'd heard on their albums. but when i saw them play a few months later at cafe du nord, they had pounded that same rawness into something wonderful and delicate. that's where this new album came from, and it's one of my favorite records in a long time.

i've added a track from this album for download. i heard this one playing on KCRW last time i was in LA, and was happy to hear that the DJ shared my intense emotions towards the record. i'm not sure if this is my favorite track on the album, but it's one of the neatest. if you like it, make sure you find this album somewhere, because there's a whole hell of a lot more where that came from.

i saw the pixies last night, and of course they rocked (even from the lawn, mhmm). but i got a migraine (i never, ever get them) that got really nasty towards the end of the show. took most of the punch out of the encore, but it was a great show anyway.

today's been lazy, just loafing around trying to dream up things to entertain myself. i rated a bunch of tracks on itunes. i made a mix cd for a friend. jessie and i watched office space on the tivo and ordered pizza. i've been begging to order in pizza pretty much every sunday night for the past couple months. something about staying at home on a sunday night that feels good, like i'm getting more out of the weekend's last few hours.

tonight i attended david and matt's housewarming birthday party. it was quite a celebritious time (i made that up). but the moment that made the most lasting impression (ok, the portuguese boy with the crooked smile made some kind of impression) was a conversation i had with a young gentleman who is a writer for the bay area reporter. this friendly bloke monopolized my attentions with a rather captivating story of the contributions record of donald fisher, who as you may or may not know, is the founder of sarah jessica parker's favorite store. this presents an interesting moral dilemma. mr. fisher, who as an individual is perfectly entitled to support the political parties and individuals of his choosing, has contributed, both individually and through a variety of PAC's, to the campaigns of a number of delightful republican politicians, including but not limited to: Bill Frist, John Ashcroft, Rick Santorum Rudy Giuliani, the Republican Senate Committee and the Republicans of Florida PAC. (i should note here however that my new BAR friend incorrectly asserted that mr. fisher donated to the committee to elect GWB — that was a different donald fisher, ret. of colorado.)

so why would a man who's company is so energetically supportive of gay rights, domestic partner support, AIDS support groups and a variety of social equality groups (and for christ's sake, have you ever BEEN to the gap building? it's like Oz) personally support the likes of john ashcroft and rick santorum? i'm not sure what to make of this. does the percentage of the money you spent on khaki pants make a more significant contribution to the right or to the left? i mean, the man is a large private donor to the SF MOMA for god's sake. does the fact that the company (through the Gap PAC and the immense charitable contributions of the Gap Foundation) does so much GOOD make up for the contributions and machinations of it's founder? does the good outweigh the bad, or is the whole thing a wash? i'll be interested to see what the BAR makes of it when the article comes out this thursday.

if my grade-school friend chris wilson (from fresno, ca) or anyone who knows him ever stumbles on this website, they should email me. i'm planting a google-bomb here because i can't seem to find him any other way.

i hope to hell that joe klein is emailing this shit to kerry. i mean, what's going to wake this guy up? klein's right on with his (albeit slightly obvious) evaluations, so i can't understand what the kerry camp could be thinking. maybe they're just dumb.

this doesn't mean anything to you, but i promise that it's a mother-fucking tragedy, and it should not have happened like this.

today we learned of the partial cost of the occupation of iraq, of bush's misguided and irresponsible policies and in some small part, the cost of his presidency. 1,000 US citizens dead. but what are they forgetting? how about the 11,000 to 13,000 iraqis that we've killed in the process? and how many more have we killed in afghanistan? when will the news media begin to tell us this, and when will we wake up to the reality of what we are doing? how in the hell can anyone vote for george bush right now?

happy birthday to mr. sparky, who turns a ravishing 21 years old today. first drink's on me, kid!
