i watched an episode of k street last weekend and was moderately impressed. there's this weird feeling though that the show is crossing some invisible line, being a fictional show about real people, played by the real people themselves. it feels a little bit troublesome, and i wonder how the show evolves from here (if at all). could this become something of a broadcast platform for politicians, much like going on Crossfire or a similar program? i mean, for a politician, what's the difference between going on national tv to state your views or going on national pay-tv to play yourself stating your views? the whole thing seems like a tricky gray-zone. howard dean learned that on the first episode.

did you know that you can key through your bookmark-bar in safari by pressing cmd+1(,2,3,4)? each number represents a link on the bar, from left to right. sadly, this key combo doesn't open any folders "in tabs" when you try this.

this is way too cute to be a ford car, even if it is only available in europe. and the computer animated commercial has way more style and fun than US car commercials do (thanks to the fun animator, shynola).

i'm finding this morning that distracted people are very attractive. they're walking down the street, among the throngs, noses in a book or head in some music or eyes just wandering. yesterday, on the freeway, i passed a guy drumming in his car, drumsticks pounding on a steering wheel he could not possibly have been holding onto.

they've changed the pattern of the traffic lights near my office. mark pointed it out to me. i walk up to the red light and i turn left, because that's what i always do. now the colors are different and the cars are still moving, and i have to stop myself from stepping into traffic.

there's a stink outside my office. my friend ari says it's a low spot in the sewer line. i have my own ideas.

after almost a year, i've come to appreciate deathcab's photo album as one of the best albums i own. the moods are so genuine, perfectly forms spheres of sound dropping from each note. it takes me away.

i read radiohead fan/rumor sites every day, and i still didn't know that the band was going to play an acoustic set at the metreon yesterday. damn! still, the show tonight was great fun. i wouldn't want to seem ungrateful.

there's something that smells like onions, coming in the kitchen window. it seems too early for anyone to be cooking onions. just another reason i hate 4am. i'll be in san diego today, in just a few hours, actually, but i'm not as thrilled by that idea as i should be. i'm afraid the sun will be fake, that i'll step off the plane and all the beautifully tan people will fall over, cardboard cutouts. this is probably just that 4am melancholy talking right now. at this hour, all the sounds outside seem fake, tinny and false, as if they're projected through a single tiny speaker. someone's picking through a garbage can down on the street, which reminds me that it's time to go. see you soon, i'm sure.

a 5th grade perspective on radiohead. just in time for tomorrow night's concert! these kids are harsher than the critics, but the author makes a hyperbolic yet semi-valid point, which is that it becomes increasingly difficult to separate one's own opinion from the bombardment of radiohead critique that spews forth from the mostly-worshipful mass media. not that it bothers me. hey, these kids made drawings! from jamison

someone called it an indian summer. coming from somewhere with a real, honest to god summer, i was never sure what that was supposed to mean. our apartment is so hot tonight, i'm afraid i'll never sleep. it's 2am and even the idea seems foolish. hasn't san francisco ever heard of air conditioning?

from jessie, an excellent review of lost in translation, sophia coppola's striking new movie. i absolutely loved every moment of this film. scarlett johansson is beautiful; every minute she spends on the screen just becomes so astonishingly important. and bill murray is truly amazing, as if the film was carved out around him. still, murray's performance isn't quite the surprise that all the review's keep making it out to be — he's done this before, and almost as well, in hamlet and razor's edge.

i went to the beach today with mark. i didn't know the beaches got warm here. i should have known that after a year. afterwards, my feet felt dirty, callous as they rub against each other. i wore sandals all day.

there's a great article in this month's wired about the recording industry and their use of a company called BigChampagne to, basically, data-mine the p2p networks. the information they're able to get, amazing, real-time customer reactivity, is such great info for the industry to have, they really ought to be paying us to use file-swapping. i'm sure they're not happy campers over the release of this article.

cool idea, difficult execution; a bluetooth harddrive, the closest thing on the market to a pocket-server. i wrote a paper concepting a wireless personal-network server in college, and i still think it's a very cool and very worthwhile idea. but bluetooth for mp3s and video? and what's with the usb 1.1 interface? gag. this ought to be better than a wireless ipod. think about it -- keep all your files, everything, in your backpack. read documents, play mp3s, watch video; do anything, from any machine with a standard wireless connection within 30 feet of your person. throw away your laptop! get nomadic. it'll be great, i promise.

file under sex sells: i work in advertising. i know i'm not supposed to be wow'ed by seeing skin in print. still, i find myself drawn to the website of a second string graphics company*, all because of a sexy, cryptic ad in wired. i hate being an easy mark.

*yes, i'm sure there's at least one of you out there that's going to scream about how great corel's something-or-another-app is, but come on, if it's not adobe (or quark, natch) then you'd better become a pdf-warrior if you ever hope to get your files printed. your printer will thank you.

entertainment: making grapefruit cool (i think they're over-selling this idea; it's the perfect fruit-juice to make a big new splash on the bar-scene, if only the market's not coddled), ecstasy may not be all bad, a decent movie and a bad movie, new ipods and bad-boy birthdays.

anybody interested in an old clamshell ibook? with upgraded hard drive (20GB) and ram (340MB), os x 10.2. i'm seeing things on ebay for as much as $500..

i rode an earthquake out of san francisco, all the way down here to LA, where i saw nick, and dan and mike, and now i'm up too too early, ready to work, watching the sun rise over more of these anonymous streets. shimmy shimmy, hurry home.

so, like, is anyone else stuck on the oc like i am? i know it's terrible, and each week it gets a little bit worse. but...i can't help myself. i don't know why, although i suspect it has a lot to do with the kid who plays seth. that, and who can pass up the train wreck that is peter gallagher's career? please, someone validate me here..

am i the only person who's pissed about having to carry an extra quarter for the muni now? it's upsetting. but bus fare aside, there are things to be happy about this week. we got tickets to see interpol, radiohead is coming up soon, indiepop rocks, and i'm writing a lot (even if it's not good, and no you can't see). these are things to cheer.

i honestly spent the last hour and a half updating my links. god knows it shouldn't take that long to update one's links (where's links management in movable type already?!) but i have been pretty bad about keeping current for a while now. most of the updates were made to my randomized Big List Of Blogs, which now includes all of the lovely, wonderful sites i've found over the last 6 some-odd-months and have browsed from bookmarks rather than linking to the poor souls. so if you're looking for something new...
