03.31.03 the word on the street this morning is that the version of Hail that leaked over the weekend is an unmastered copy. this would explain the lack of crossfades, but overall i thought the tracks sound pretty complete. a moderator on the cmj messageboard posted the following message this morning: "don't judge the record by [those mp3s]; those are different, unmastered mixes from what appears on the final version of the record. the record sounds a LOT better than that." this, of course, gives one hope that the june release will still hold some surprise for us, making this recent preview all the more sweet. # 03.30.03 hey heeey heeeeeeeeyyyy! here's a great track from that new cat power disc. probably my favorite on the album. # it's been a great weekend for music around here. i picked up new albums by interpol (finally, the smith's album made just for me) idlewild (i totally had a thing for the boy who sold it to me..) and cat power. then this! # henry norr, former editor of macweek magazine (now eweek), sf chronicle technology columnist and my boyfriend's favorite newsman has been suspended without pay following his off-duty participation in the recent pacific stock exchange protest. so much for your freedom of expression, journalists, but god forbid we get any critical commentary from these damned embeds. # 03.29.03 turns out that in addition to bombing the hell out of them, we're also spamming iraq. # 03.27.03 ha! i wish! update: i was planning to leave the comparison topic alone, but it seems that (in addition to the rather nice comparison offered above by brian) there is a larger movement afoot by those who would compare people to clay, the i'm too nice to say what i really think kid on american idol. seems this is happening to aaron's lady in waiting, keith. me too. twice today i got it from coworkers. please, people, please, keep that comparison to yourselves. # richard perle has just resigned. # "Snake trying to eat Sooty." i know this isn't funny, but i just can't stop laughing. # the white stripes play four nights with conan o'brien and the strokes go into the studio with (radiohead/travis/beck/etc producer) nigel godrich. there was an article about blur too, but it was just too depressing to bother posting. go go music tabloids. # 03.26.03 finally, someone in congress heard us. # your life: plan A or plan B? (more on this to come) # 03.25.03 interesting (if brief) transcription of sergey brin's discussion of google at PC Forum, via cory doctorow. # today is a good email day. i've got several very nice, very interesting messages. you know who you are. thank you. # 03.24.03 today i paid off just over half of my live debt (not of the education variety). it's a nice, light feeling. # sonicblue, manufacturer of tivo-competetor replayTV has filed for bankruptcy. is this forecasting the downfall of the dvr industry (i.e. tivo and whoever buys replaytv)? # confirmed news: radiohead LP6 to be titled hail to the thief and will feature 14 tracks, of which two are previously unheard, unplayed, unaired, unshared: backdrifts and the gloaming. # 03.23.03 is it too late for me to say how much i wish richard had stayed here? it's not often that i find myself in the surprising company of the exotically fascinating and today, riding a bus at random with j and b i passed balboa street, struck by the realization that i've only been to balboa street with richard and with no one else. perhaps i should stay off balboa forever. so i guess i mean, wow, you don't meet people like richard every day and i sure wish you did. # greenplastic is reporting that radiohead will announce the title and track listing for the forthcoming LP 6, which is expected to be released in early june. the most likely candidate for album title is hail to the thief and the album is rumored to come in at whopping 14 tracks long (past rh albums have topped out at 12 tracks). filter magazine has heard a four track preview and is impressed, calling the new album "simply amazing." # 03.22.03 in this context, i really dislike the use of the word embedded. it seems pompous and presumptuous in a dot-com kind of way. # 03.21.03 really, it's just too easy. # do you read ben and mena's six log? don't they look like some kind of epcot couple of the future in those mug photos? totally jetsons. # 03.20.03 what the hell is the 'shock and awe' phase?! what the fuck are they planning to do? how much more messed up can this get? and can i tell you, really, i'm going to lose my mind if these helicopters are circling all night. # downtown san francisco is effectively closed to vehicle traffic as of 8:30 AM this morning. market street and most cross streets in or around the financial district have been blocked off by protesters. any busses running across or down market street are diverted or at a standstill. oddly, at some intersections, police are blocking pedestrians. no protesters are impeding the flow of foot traffic. # i'm trying to make a radiohead mix cd for a coworker. i've cut and cut and cut. there's so much to include! the other day, i realized i needed to make it two discs, divide the work into different ideas. but the second disc wont stop growing. everything feels important. where do you stop? # 03.19.03 US senate saves ANWR! yay! # nobody's coming to prosaic* for the latest war news, and anyone visiting likely knows where i stand on all of this, so i'll keep it brief: if you're in san francisco and not protesting tomorrow (i.e. trying to go to work), check out indymedia.org to find out what protest plans are and here to find out what streets and intersections are likely to be blocked off. # as if in a dream, the research paper formerly known as my senior project has sprouted legs and entered itself in another, larger competition. it came home last night wearing a sash that said "number 2" and carrying a bundle of roses. who knew she was so pretty? # 03.18.03 happy two year tuesday, baby. you make every minute better than the last. # 03.17.03 for the record, he wasn't helping my dead neighbor paranoia by sending emails with the subject line "eunice is dead" this morning. sick. i'm very susceptible to these kinds of suggestions. # turns out kevin sites, former broadcast prof at my old school (he of the long flowing mane and the awkwardly revealing open shirted fame) is now a warblogger in iraq. i'm disturbed first of all because he refers to previous entries under the name "war boy journals" (boy? boy?) and also because i'm not sure i can really take seriously anyone who wears pants that tight. # 03.16.03 in a mid-day non sequitur, i have a craving for taco bell. too bad i'm so terrified of downtown fast-food outlets. # world health organization, US center for disease control express growing concern over mystery illness. # much as i hate to admit it, this event just points out the greater reality of our country's division over bush and the rush to war. easy to forget from out here on the west coast that there are large parts of this country who's opinion i don't have any idea of. it's easy to say that america doesn't support the current actions of our government, but is it true? # 03.15.03 "Why can't there be a movie that tells a strong story, is full of humor and pathos, is packed with powerful performances, and features a lot of explicit sex?" # 03.14.03 had no idea there was a protest planned for this morning, otherwise i would never have gotten on that bus. market street, all of the financial district and many feeder streets were backed up, jammed up. my bus driver, having none of it, made himself a detour and let folks off wherever they wanted to be let off (stop lights, in traffic, whatever). now i can hear a helicopter circling the affected area. check local listings for time and channel. # 03.13.03 congratulations, groom one and groom two! it's all gushy and excited over here. # isn't this a little scary? i mean, the name, the logo, the ad campaign; it's all so terribly benign, it's sinister... # 03.12.03 brian wrote a song. it's good. go listen. # 03.11.03 mcdonald's to start offering wireless access with the purchase of a value meal. careful not to get fry grease on your keyboard. # nostalgia tripping, an electronic archeologist, i tonight uncovered versions zero and below of this website. a truly frightening tapestry of teen angst, unacknowledged homosexual tension, electronic histrionics and way too much self-loathing. at the time, i took great pleasure in hiding throughout these pages other, mini-sites, tiny gems of bad design scattered with tauntingly bad lyric, prose and poetry. for the court's consideration, the following article is entered into evidence. where will you go, when these halls are haunted? voices of the damned, screaming in your ears. they will not change us (when i am like this) & will you promise not to leave me, to stand by my side? (when i am like this) and if i don't believe you? (when i am like this) # 03.10.03 getting off the bus this evening on what must be the nastiest stretch of street for about 5 blocks, i was surprised to find the wide, empty street filled with the sweet smell of baby powder and flowers. later, i made the trek to the new indian dive-around-the-corner, where i enjoyed the best sarson ka saag i've ever had. # i'm very sad to realize that i wont be able to see margaret cho's performance this coming weekend. if only there were more days in the week. # 03.09.03 thanks to brian for pointing out a fix for the safari/bookmarklet issue. so maybe it's something that can fix on the mt side and not on the browser side. good to know. # [bitching] i just don't understand why we're in versions 0.64 and 0.70 of safari and chimera/camino (respectively) and still nobody has been able to make bookmarklets work while popup blocking is enabled. is it really that hard? [/bitching] # the cabs are out in force tonight. mostly empty, trawling. out the window, down on the street, i count three at every change of the light. it was a good day for socializing, a full day out of the house. rise and shine, early for a haircut, always nice when you know your stylist, the small talk turns familiar, the experience less tedious. took some sunshine to make a big breakfast, polish the floors, play with the cat, open wide the windows to a fresh fresh day. a terribly interesting movie with richard, delightful with a walk and with a talk, wish there was time for more but other plans stood. a very nice, very full evening with a new friend, a refreshing addition to my narrow san francisco social scene and a daring adventure with a strange new ethnic dish. riding home in the cab, maybe i touched a place, found a natural connect with that influenced space, where my head spins only with the help of those most advanced kinds of pharmacology, the unbearable lightness, the easy joy, cool blasts of serotonin dancing across nerves. still not the same when i find it by myself. i miss. # 03.08.03 for the record, apple's public betas really are more buttoned up than the internal builds that keep leaking out. but if you need .64, just ask. # always watchful prosaic* friend tyler brings us clever interpretations of those lovely illustrations that populate the fabulous homeland security debacle located at ready.gov - thanks tyler! # 03.07.03 after spending almost 6 months in 800x600 pixel shame, i got a new machine at work. i can't believe i'm so excited that i'm blogging this. but it's just so cool to have a responsive os x machine in my life finally! # 03.06.03 do i really need to say anything? camino (chimera!) 0.7 is out. i'm downloading it now. # i'm not so codependent that i can't stand to be apart from my boyfriend for a measly week. nevertheless, there's nothing quite so sad as the very first moment of walking into an empty apartment, when you realize that it's going to stay that way all night long. such events did produce a highlight for the day however, which was, without a doubt, listening to my boss (in the elevator) trying to make up a song she called "jessie's gone" to the tune of jesse's girl. it was an exercise in something, to be sure. # 03.05.03 not that this has, you know, any relevance to me or my life, but apparently the sponge (of seinfeld lore) is back. expected to be FDA approved and back on the market in the US soon, sponge-worshipers can currently get them over the internet, from canada. interesting, if not entirely useless information. i mean, are there any straight women reading this site? like, two, right? # you know how sometimes a word will suddenly appear on your radar, everywhere and all at once? say for instance, you hear a new word of phrase, something kind of out-there, one that you've never really heard before. and then, out of nowhere, you're assaulted by it? the word just starts popping up everywhere. it's a very subtle cultural phenomenon whereby a formerly unknown and rather indie word/phrase gains popularity and presence very quickly. the last time this happened to me was with sea change, and the beck album was really just the beginning. now, just yesterday, i got an all-new blip on my radar from the phrase stepford wives. just wait. it'll be everywhere again soon. # according to an article in today's la times (and a number of rumor sites) apple is planning to launch a music download service in the coming weeks. the buzz is that search, purchase and download would be driven through itunes, with a likely per-song charge of $0.99 each. there's more to say about this, but it's all speculation until the service is announced (if true at all). # 03.04.03 apple has posted additional applescripts for use with clicker. at the same time, a freeware app has emerged (a beta) with similar functions and remote-mousing abilities. cool shits. # at brian's insistence, we now have an rss feed. in case you're into that sort of thing. # so pretty ..must resist phone envy.. # thank godness for the hard work of courageous young men like richard, without whose advice i might have pulled out my hair trying to solve a few momentary lapses tonight in movabletype. she gets finicky from time to time, and on this occasion, the lady in blue tried to eat up my darling grotesque, which had patiently waited an entire month for attention from me. aren't i glad to have read that handy tip well almost two months ago? and why did it not cause me trouble until just now? my hands smell like pizza. i hate the web. # 03.03.03 ok, so it's got a new name, even a trademark, but when will we see version 0.7 in the wild? to say nothing of a 1.0 release. come on guys, it's been months and safari is gaining fast. # i'm very sad to hear through the grapevine that my new supervisor is planning to get new PC's for everyone in our department. as with all rumor and speculation, i can only hope that it's not true - it was only recently that i was finally able to convince the power's that be to give me an os x based g4 machine! wherefor art thou, oh firewire? # 03.02.03 in an internet-buying double-take, i just realized that one can download (via monthly subscription or per-episode fee) mp3s of this american life from audible.com. then i could play them on my ipod. sweet. # venezuela's losing time. how do they expect to catch tonight's season premier of six feet under like that? poor bastards. maybe chris will send them a tape. am i a whore if i'm excited? # 03.01.03 i want a lover i don't have to love / i want a boy who's so drunk he doesn't talk / hey where's the kid with the chemicals / i got a hunger and i can't seem to get full / i need some meaning i can memorize / the kind i have always seems to slip my mind time once again for a tragic-music mp3, and what better than bright eyes' lover i don't have to love. there's one point where i think the whole thing is almost a little cure, or am i just crazy?
