MEDIA EXPLOSION
so much new content, your head will hurt. below you will find some new images. it's a pairing of boys about campus and snapshots from one of my labs. you can see for the first time, in part, what i do with my precious time. (bet you thought all i did was eat hot dogs)

besides the pictures, you can find not one but two new mp3's posted in sound. r.e.m.'s dense, hauntingly beautiful saturn returns off an otherwise worthless album. plus, since i'm feeling both generous and somewhat like dancing, i've posted a bonus, pop-tastic mp3 of kylie minogue's fever. crazy semi-70's dance influence, filled with that mid-80's brand of female vocal & synth fun and just a little britney to make it all a good time.

and while we're at it, i've updated my bio. though it still says a lot of the same, it was starting to feel a bit old. enjoy it all, and try to make it last through the weekend.

"In Mormondom, there is a social expectation--particularly among the females--to put on a mask, say 'Yes' to everything that comes at her and hide the misery and pain. I call it the 'Mother of Zion' syndrome. You are supposed to be perfect because Mrs. Smith across the street can do it and she has three more kids than you and her hair is always in place. I think the cultural issue is very real. There is the expectation that you should be happy, and if you're not happy, you're failing."

surprise, surprise, are you surprised? turns out utah has almost twice the national average for prescription antidepressants.

a freak (freak) storm in central mexico results in 220 million frozen, dead monarch butterflies. piles of dead butterflies, a foot deep. how depressing is that image?

oh yeah, i almost forgot - how does one go about getting a swank place like brian and matt?

#

fun news from jessie: on wednesday (tomorrow) found magazine will be hanging out at linnaea's here in slo.

#

so i'm swamped with work this week. including a paper for my argumentative writing class. we have to write one paper arguing in favor of a subject. then we have to write another paper arguing against the same subject. i was going to do gay marriage (always a solid choice) but a.) it's depressing b.) it wont be easy to write from the other side. so, with that in mind, let's hear your craziest ideas for argument topics. nothing is sacred.

crush alert! i've just recently been made aware of the hotness (see above) that is bassist guy berryman of the brit band coldplay. this discovery occured thanks to a repaired vcr and a find comb viewing of a long ago gift. (or, "thanks, dayv and aaron!")

NEWS
in the interest of procrastination, it's time once again for a prosaic* news round-up!
this round-up is brought to you by the exclaimation mark, Kylie Minogue, and salon, who was kind enough to publish all this stuff in the first place.
  • legal validity of fingerprints in question!
  • enron wants money to pay off a power plant that India didn't want in the first place.
  • ricochet is back!
  • major revisions planned for ICANN.
  • british women convicted of animal cruelty after throwing pet iguana at police officers.

today reeks of missed opportunities.

#

question: are your memories in the third person, or first? when you remember your childhood, do you see yourself, younger, from afar? or do you remember the world through your own eyes, unable to really see yourself? sidenote: were you an only child?

has anyone seen the new xerox commericals? i can't believe it. if i have to hear one more time about on-demand publishing, i swear i'll vomit. why can't xerox just die already?

#

after first hearing about it from sparky, i finally was able to rent a copy of hal hartley's sixty-minute vision of the apocalypse (the book of life). it was interesting to say the least. or perhaps the most. i'm not sure yet. the whole thing felt like a bit like an art student film, all skewed camera angles, post production effects and stilted dialog. oddly enough however, it drew me in a bit. by the end i was intrigued. originally i wanted to see it for the scene featuring pj harvey rocking out on music store headphones. that scene was, as billed, a brief moment of polly-jean-ecstasy. otherwise, i'm not sure about the rest of it. i suppose the jury is still out. has anyone else seen this thing and care to share with the rest of us? [plot synopsis here for the curious]

#

brent has something new written in his previous section. i can't help but be amazed (and inspired) by the clean line his words form. clean, but not direct. indirect, but not wandering. neither organic or synthetic. it feel like a strange mix of...something etheral, but simple. i think it feels like flying, very slowly and very low to the ground.

me: hi woman with whom i have not spoken since your recent divorce from a seemingly greencard marriage to my cousin. i was hoping to exploit any remaining familial allegiance you might feel towards me in the form of assistance in the San Francisco property management market, of which you have recently aquired a certain percentage.

cousin: ok.

tune in tomorrow for more tales of shameless begging! or, if you're interested in providing opportunities for employment or housing, get in on the fun!

"This is the American cultural response to boredom with the suburbs. Clothing suburbia in urban mannerisms, for a market of people who think it's funky to have restaurants and shops downstairs - it's a great marketing gimmick, but it's pretend urbanism."

the new york times has a story on the newest shopping mall concept: residential/retail centers. here sir, is your spacious and accommodating living space, a two bedroom apartment located immediately upstairs from (choose one: starbucks, crate & barrel, gucci). at first blush, the idea of mixed use development sounds really smart (and perhaps it is). but when the full picture of this complex (santana row, in san jose, calif.) becomes apparent, the idea is exposed for the pop-retail planning fad that is it. sure, people want to live on Main Street. sure, people want to live in a cozy apartment upstairs over a cozy shop. sure, people want to live within walking distance of life's conveniences. but what seems to be missing is the good neighbor factor. it's one thing to live above mr hooper's grocery shop, but it's a whole other thing to live upstairs from applebee's.

FIVE DAY FORCAST
it's so suddenly spring. sunny and warm, highs in the 70s, light breeze from the southwest. beach weather. outdoor weather. we'll start getting together in the evenings to barbeque. we'll start ditching classes for the beach. it's shirtless weather. it's shorts weather.

i want the warm nights, the warm lights. i want to be with friends in the waning light, laughing and talking. i want to dance outdoors in the bonfire glow. i want to feel the warm pavement on my bare feet. the cool salty water wrapping around my ankles.

tall people shouldn't wear shorts. we look silly. either they fit and their too short or they're too baggy and too long. never quite right. i don't like to wear them, and i pay the price in this weather.

the boys are out in force today. they're like animals, as if somehow they know when they wake on these mornings that it's time to shed the winter's furs. they're already walking and biking and swimming. the shirts are coming off today. tomorrow they'll be laying on the grass. i'll take my camera tomorrow.

#

are they pets, or does he just need to clean his apartment? jessie get's sea monkeys!

wow. apple.slashdot.org - i'm amazed. does this mean we've been accepted by the geeks, or just given a cozy doghouse on the front porch?

the long weekend turned into a longer weekend and the short week has turned into a shorter week. all of which means there's not a lot of time-for-blogging (tfb), among other important things (homework, friends, food, sleep). so expect coverage here at prosaic* to be spotty at best for a few days. in the meantime, here's a brief roundup of recent news and events:

  • n'sync in space
  • supreme court to tackle runaway copyrights
  • bushzilla continues to stomp around asia. next stop, china.
  • barbara and dianne are not fighting after sawyer won an interview with rosie o'donnell about her sexuality.
  • did someone say same-sex adoption? yeah, that was aaron. way to go, dadio!
  • sparky teaches us that steamed milk holds the answers to all of life's questions

SHIRTLESS JOY
as i'm often reminded by my tracking data, one of the most common search referrals to land visitors here at this site is the term shirtless boy. go ahead, click it. notice how prosaic* is actually the number two result for this highly common search. and while it's true that i've mentioned shirtless boys here quite often, it occurs to me that i've never quite made good on this implied promise. which makes me a tease.

since i'm leaving town this weekend, for the holiday, the opportunities to update will be minimal. so, in honor of the poor, disappointed folks who come here looking for shirtless boys, and for those of you (yes, both of you) who will check back throughout the weekend, hungrily awaiting the next morsel of prose, i leave you with these images. i dug some pictures of shirtless boys out from my porn/near-porn files and have brought them here for you, in all their shirtless glory. enjoy, and have a very pleasant, boy filled weekend.

my school's gay club (and some other clubs, it seems) had a same-sex hand holding day today. the event's name might need a little PR boost, but it's a neat idea. way to go!

#

only a nerd, only on this day: slashdot editor proposes on front page. happy valentine's day kids!

#

in keeping with the recent morning theme, a new mp3 is available. it's my favorite track from the beatle's classic revolver.

i thought i knew how to be disillusioned with school. but once again, brent shows me up.

#

from the iht, a wicked-smart analysis of the US economy's self-cleaning nature. author david ignatius suggests that a little enron-style shame might be just the ticket for japan's comotose economic situation.

#

do you know what i like? go ahead, ask me what i like. why, i'll tell you what i like. i like breakfast. anytime of the day, i'm in the mood. i like one egg, over easy, still kinda runny. i like it with a slice of toast, golden brown, warm, moist with butter, still crunchy. and a glass of orange juice. yeah, i like that.

#

here's a list of links to opt out of many pop-up ads. {thanks, dayv}

if you're a mac fan, then you've probably already heard - pixar has done some really cute spots for the new imac.

#

not to get all heavy and shit, but my professor mentioned in class this morning that native american youth have an abnormally high rate of suicide. she didn't give figures, so i thought i'd check it out. over at the center for disease control's website is a very nice tool for searching through mortality data.

i was able to come up with this, which quite plainly shows that the suicide rate among native americans, age 15-19 is almost double that of whites in the same age group. i had hoped to compare this rate to that of gay youth within the same age group, a rate which is said to also be double that of it's non-gay counterparts. but i got really depressed while trying to find the actual figures on the subject (lots of talk, not much data) and gave up.

my coffee is a long and lingering hot shower, very first thing out of bed.

the iht is reporting that digital imaging startup foveon has developed a new kind of sensor that approaches image capture in a whole new way. either digital photography just broke a glass ceiling, or someone's a little press-release happy. {thanks, darin}

DREAM
a fire alarm goes off. everyone evacuates my parent's house, which has become a (small) women's university. as people pour out onto the lawn, i notice that my father has spliced together two trees. they now grow together in an arch. a very large and very real missle is leaning against the tree arch, which is much taller than the buildings around it.

i hear a police siren and turn to see a pair of police cars flying towards us, in close pursuit of a similarly airborne BWM. i remarked at what a nice car the beamer was, as it skipped across our lawn and took off again.

there was more too, about a factory that was making gay aliens. who were hitting on me.

#

ok, i swear this is not an ad: at&t is offering flat rate long distance. this could be the best thing that ever happened to my phone bill. the catch? it's only flat rate if you're calling another at&t long distance customer. by a show of hands, who out there does not have at&t for their long distance?

#

as part of my merced trip, i got to see a working installation of the largest press in the world. this machine had the horizontal dimensions of a house, stacked five high. the machine was fully automated, taking a crew of only six to operate. it was driven from a control room that is larger than my boyfriend's apartment. three flights of stairs got us up inside the beast, where we found benches scattered throughout the machine, so workers could sit to rest or to wait during production. i would not have been surprised to find a water fountain or a soda machine built in somewhere. truly amazing.

#

in other news, i can't find my senior evaluation. shut up. i know it's here somewhere. i just have to find it before monday morning, 7am. that's when i register for my last quarter of college. so it's understandably important that i not fuck it up. only, i can't remember if i needed to take two more units of GE or not. i don't think i did. matter of fact, i'm pretty sure i didn't. but i wont swear to it. shit, where it is?

i'm going to take music of the beatles. so there.

#

i've been reading a lot of blogs recently. it's nice, because it's easier than real socializing. specifically, i've enjoyed noah, david and bart. and various, sundry others.

#

sorry for the drought. i was out of town. in merced. stop laughing.

 02.06.02

does anyone know where i could find instructional video music? you know, that really bad, repetative, muzac-esque synthesizer stuff that plauges instructional videos from the late 70's and 80's. don't feign ignorance on this one. you know what i'm talking about.

#

ok, this is the last girl-sex post for a while: apparently, oral sex is good for women trying to get pregnant. and apparently they should swallow.

#

prosaic* photo's are back in action, with three new galleries available right now. normally i wouldn't post so many at once, but i've been sitting on these for a while now (as evidenced by the christmas pictures). some of my favorites (ok, probably all of them) come from the last gallery, taken on 02.03.02 at san luis obispo's local drive in. too bad i didn't get a shot of the kindly midget who runs the place.

The first crash, which occurred at 7:14 a.m., involved 63 vehicles, including six tractor-trailer trucks. Ten minutes later, a second crash 1 1/2 miles south, tied up 24 vehicles, causing minor injuries.

ah, fresno, home sweet home. i'm glad my parents don't commute along that highway. this sort of thing happens a lot in the valley during the fog season. any resident of the central valley will tell you that this is not an uncommon sight during the winter. you don't know fog until you've lived there. when it gets dense enough, it echoes. {thanks, matt}

ALONE
i live alone, sometimes, inside my own private world of sound and fury. i sit, wrapped up inside of the headphones i got for christmas. they're perfect - big and loud, keeping in the inside sounds and keeping out the outside sounds. they sound amazing. i take my laptop and sit in my favorite chair. it's an old red rocking chair. my grandfather gave it to me. i sit and listen to music and enjoy knowing that the world spins on outside, without me.

today i spent money on myself. i got new cds. gomez. mogwai. i'm all wrapped up and warm in here.

#

i really like the latest post in "jason talk" (hey, i didn't make up the name) over at contrasts. it's got a certain observers quality to it that i often associate with raymond carver stories. of course, that could just be because it involves inebriated characters

#

from ananova: women can be nude in public because their genitals are not obviously exposed. huh. like i'd know.

THREE DEGREES
tonight i find myself one (ok, three) degrees closer to stardom. my roommate has just informed me that his band has successfully recruited Ryan Urich to play the drums. who is Ryan Urich, you ask? why, only the son of Robert Urich, acclaimed star of hits such as when animals attack!, love boat: the next wave and spencer: for hire. the son of this man, this national treasure, will come to my house and play the drums. amazing.

#

why do so many people insist on treating the symptom while ignoring the root cause?

#

i have two questions to ask: why red shoes?! have you noticed this trend in men's fashion? can someone explain it? it's not done in a way that really matches, at least not what i've seen. (notice how by only asking one question, it carries more weight?)

#

today:
  • my glasses broke. 45 minutes later, dejected, i walked down the street to the optomitrist and asked the nice lady to help me fix my attempts to fix them.
  • saw two old men in a big truck, wearing tuxedos (and red bowties)
  • six more weeks of winter my ass! it's sprint time here - sunny and 72.
  • it's tropical cyclone chris - and it's about damned time i got a storm named after me. storm of the century, they'll call it.

#

it's hard rock heaven over at contrasts.net, and i've got proof!

#

fresh and smooth as a powdered ass, it's a new mp3! featuring vocals by bjork, this song appears on plaid's album not for threes. it's called lilith, and you'll love it.

#

steve is back and he's pushing his madcap stylings through the use of nouveau ugly. but, didn't jessie really pioneer this technique long ago?

#

 02.02.02

this just in: boy plays video games for days - hands fall off! ok, not really, but there is a big deal being made out of this "hand-arm vibration syndrome" that kids could get from video games. wow! look out, if your child plays video games incessantly, they could be at risk for any of the following: 1.) brain rot 2.) eye damage 3.) stupidity.

#

as pointed out to me in a wired sidebar, today is a palindrome day. [2/02/02] so at 8:02 tonight (20:02), be sure to celebrate; apparently this sort of thing wont happen again for another 110 years.

#

it's a real shame, but how was the company responsible for the beautiful film final fantasy supposed to stay open if the film itself just plain sucked?
