right now, in sound, you can download, for free, the next-big-thing in pop music: krimmel and cabrito. that's right, my roommates have turned from a life of crime to become pop legends in the making. and you can find their first song, marie right here. it's pop-tastic. here's what the artists have to say about it:
dayv: recording this song was such a great experience, i had wild sex with a monkey afterwards.
jon: i had hoped to have monkey sex, but he was in no condition after dayv was finished with him.

America mulls national ID cards.
my first reaction to this is shock. after reading that Germany, France and Spain (among others) have a similar system in place, i'm left pretty divided. what's your take?

#

commenting on my last post was unfortunatly broken shortly after someone left an unsigned and rather mean-spirited reply. i left an equally mean spirited and slightly reactionary responce, but decided to take it down. the general idea however, is such: this is my webpage. if you don't like me or what i'm saying, you're not being forced to stay. also, it should be noted that my comment system logs IP addresses. that means that when you leave an unsigned comment, i have the ability to discover your identity. in here, i'm being honest. it's all i really ask of you.

#

today, i've chosen to link myself. 'but chris,' you ask, 'why this act of unseemly vanity?' well, gentle reader, it's almost entirely based on the fact that i'm too tired/sore to actually navigate to another page right now. can i tell you how great this gym thing is? probably not.
[the sarcasm impared will note that i'm employing it in the above sentence]

a recently assembled panorama from my recent hike. this is the view at the top. worth the effort, for sure.
[fair warning: the image is rather wide, so you'll have to scroll sideways]

#

after weeks of pestering those around me, i'm suddenly overwhelmed with support for the regular attendance of the on-campus gym. so i'm looking at a twice a day / 2 days a week workout, split between two or three different groups of people. suddenly i see how the gym can become a social endeavour.

the only question remaining is that of the showers. on the one hand, as mark points out, the college-gym shower is full of young men, aged 18-23, naked, wet and pumped. i mean, i'd pay a monthly fee for mediocre hidden-camera shots of this stuff. on the other hand, just the thought of public showers brings on a rush of pre/mid-pubescent junior-high school locker room trauma. what's a boy to do?

1:00 p.m. Meet someone for whom you only know his waist, chest and penis size from AOL M4M chat for lunch at a hot, new restaurant. Because the matre d' recognizes you from a gay bar, you are whisked past the Christian heterosexual couples who have been waiting patiently for a table since 12:30.

damn, they've found us out! the homosexual agenda, revealed. at least now i know how to spend my day. thank goodness. has anyone else been missing their membership subscription to homo monthly? i think they have my address wrong. (thanks go to dan, who insists that's all the webpage he needs)

BODY MODIFICATIONS
i've never considered myself a big fan of the idea, but i've long thought that if i ever did want to do it, the barcode was the way to go. after thinking it over for quite a while, i took the plunge. picture it: me, my shirt taped to my back, my head between my knees, my face contorted with pain, while a very hot young man pounds my backside with needles and machinery. trust me, it wasn't as hot as it sounds.

"I am zooming in on a tight shot of the dead guy and a splash of red. Going into his khaki uniform in a pool of blood in the sand. The dead man's face is slightly gray. You are making a visual here. But inside something is screaming, "My God.'

from a 1994 TIME magazine article on the life and death of kevin carter, pulitzer prize winning photojournalist. oh yeah, and there's a sad manic's song about him too. if you were wondering.

#

just got the manic street preachers' everything must go and i'm really liking it. i was a little unsure how i'd feel about the manic's, as those who know them seem a bit divided. did lots of other fun things this weekend too. more on that later.

apparently it's just a bad time to be in charge of a newspaper. editors are being dropped all over.

 10.24.01

I was at the student union store this evening gathering my usual study supplies: candy, index cards, more funkin candy. Normally I ll stop in there, grab my shite, chat with the deadly cute girl who works behind the counter, mumble something incoherent about school and books, wait for the awkward silence to pass, and then run screaming and weeping like a girl. Yeah, its complicated, but it works for me.

my roommate's friend ameer has a blog. it's pretty funny. be sure to check out the second sidebar link.

#

only-in-college moment #64:
you sit around for half an hour with your roommates trying to remember the word for intervention. and nobody knows why.

NEW STUFF!
yes, there's some all-new stuff here finally. it's not all those new pictures i've been taking. those come after midterms. in the meantime, there's a new mp3 up, straight from the new remy zero album. it's called glorious #1 and it's loud-good fun. i'm afraid it might be the single, which means you might hear it on the radio some day, but don't blame me if they hit it with the mainstream anytime soon. grab the song and give it a listen, i'm almost guaranteeing that you'll like it a bit. (that means you too, dayv.)

go get it here.

would someone familiar with new york tell me where exactly this will go, and reassure me that it's not going to be some kind of wtc-related thing? actually, the technology aspect and the idea of an aol-controlled smart building is scarier. i mean, it's aol for christ's sake...

#

today i got, for the first time in quite a while (ever?), a compliment about my ass. ok, it was really about my ass in these, but at least it was a compliment in the direction of my ass. pretty cool. (by slight demand, the and subject in question)

#

ok, so it's pretty cool. it's not that cool, but it's pretty cool. what is much cooler however, is an updated iTunes. neato, free-o!

#

go get 'em! eight live radiohead tracks from the soon-to-be-released I Might Be Wrong live EP. they should be good, especially like spinning plates. i however, for the first time ever, am going to wait for the single to be released. probably.

#

 10.21.01

i just got back from a super-straight camping weekend. (destined not to fall victim to the same fate as ernie's camping trip) the whole event was really pretty fun, if you subtract the pain-inducing 'hike' bit.

DREAM:
walking through chinatown with Imelda Marcos, who is wheelchair-bound, except instead of a wheelchair, she is being carried by a six foot-six robot that looks like a fat woman in a house dress. a straight guy keeps trying to talk to me about sports. what did i eat last night?

#

macromedia is filing a lawsuit against adobe, claiming that they own the patent behind photoshop. does anyone know any more about this? it sounds like crazy-talk to me, but i'd like to find out the details.

#

Somewhere, the baby jesus is weeping quietly in a cheap hotel room, cradling an empty bottle of rotgut whiskey, with no sound but the white noise hissing of a broken television set.

metafilter: even when it's bad, it can still be so good.

#

MIDTERMS
it must be 3 am when your roommate is drinking milk from a measuring cup, people are walking around on their hands, and everyone learns the support-group dance. yea college.

next week: apple is planning to unveil a new toy. but they wont say what it is.

look! good news! ghost world is playing here in san luis obispo, finally!

well this can't be any good.

this is jason. his often hilarious stories are now a new section at contrasts, called jason talk. yeah, well, i didn't come up with the name.

so i've always sort of felt like i'd be a whiny bitch if i posted anything about coming out. but considering that i'm fast-approaching the two year mark, i figured i'd do it anyway, regardless of the whiny-bitch status you'll now assign to me. there's a lot more to the story, and someday i might tell it, so i thought i should call this part one.

whoo hoo! we got more domestic partner benefits! thanks gov. davis! [go here to register]

UPDATE:
"In one fell swoop, Gray Davis has cheapened every marriage in the state, undermined the vote of the people, pandered to the special interests, frivolously spent taxpayer money and broken his written promise to the citizens of California," said Randy Thomasson, director of the Campaign for California Families. [via cnn]
i wish i could tell Randy Thomasson to get fucked.

when did i stop being blonde? i mean, i was a blonde all through my childhood, as long as i can remember. dirty blonde, but blonde nevertheless. then one day i just looked up and realized my hair was brown. do i have to say it's "brown" or is there some more interesting word i get to use? anyone?

this from dan, who's always thinking of us here at prosaic. in reference to earlier theories on the contents of air-dropped supplies in Afghanistan:
But the sweetest touch, the most American thing of all, is the Moist Towelette. "Here is your Moist Towelette," it says in English on the back. "It will clean and refresh your hands and face without soap and water. Self-dries in seconds, leaving skin smooth and soft."

everyone kept telling me that fall was the best time of year to be in san francisco. who knew they were so right? the night-time is so perfect, it's like a lukewarm bath; you can't even tell you're in it. which all made last night the perfect sidewalk night. the street was full of people, out for a walk, wandering around, arm in arm, chatting with strangers. it was exactly like steven johnson's sidewalk city.

the highlight was a spot of dynamic graffiti - a young man with a streetfront window and an overhead projector (remember the kind your teacher would write on in high school?) projecting his cartoons onto the wall of a parking garage across the street. jessie and i sat down on a nearby stoop and watched for a bit as the people walking down the street stopped to look at the shadows playing across the street from them. it was one of the most interesting urban moments i've seen before.

this entry brought to you via AIM, thanks to bloggerbot. how cool is this?

according to salon, things are getting pretty nasty right now.

i'm going to san francisco this weekend. i hope nothing happens - i have a lot of homework to do.

#

i want to avoid the melancholy as much as possible today, but i can't help but be amazed that a month has passed already. on the same token, how could it have only been a month? in the shower this morning i kept thinking of that morning, watching it all happen on the little glowing screen and not quite believing it. i really thought it was a dream - everything felt a little bit off, nothing felt quite right about the whole thing. then i saw the buildings start to fall, and my counscious mind is screaming at me that it can't possibly be real, it's all a dream. and it felt like one, too. the way details are pushed around in a dream, some so impossibly clear, others swept aside in such a 'don't worry about this' manner.

that's the last you'll hear from me about it. my school is ringing the bells at 8:45 this morning, and i'll probably hear them as i'm walking in. i wanted to do something fun for National Coming Out Day, but the best i could think of was wearing this really gay yellow shirt i have. better luck next year.

#

my english class spent some time speculating on the contents of US supply drops being made to the Afghans. our conclusions:
GAP:
cargo pants
last season's denim

Starbucks:
mocha frap mix
sumatra blend
one-touch espresso machine

Other: sesame street band-aids
greeting card:
"get well soon! love, The Bush Family" (including picture of GW, Jena, et al)

#

 10.09.01

oooh, and it looks like national coming out day falls on October 11, the one month aniversary of that day. are we all just going to stay in this year then?

#

a new book being released in germany next week claims that hitler may have been gay, and that he had "numerous homoerotic friendships." let's all remember that he was a vegitarian too. so no blaming us for his tendancies towards being a mass-murdering fuck-head. (all this and more, via the always on-top dan-o [no link, sorry] )

#

only at cal poly moment #78:
girl walking around with a sledgehammer and a backpack.

#

today's theme: shirtless boys with broad shoulders wearing baggy pants. whew, ain't that a national holiday?

#

whew! finally, the massive collection of pictures taken this weekend in santa barbara are up. in the future, i promise there wont be so many pictures at a time, but since this is the first stuff off my new camera, i'm pretty excited. let me know what you think. there are three sets here.

HAIR! (flow it, show it)
i went today to see the butcher of seville. i swear to each and every one of you, this is the last time i get a haircut that i don't like. laugh if you will at the 8-year-old-boy haircut that i got today, but it's not funny when they take your glasses away. you're at their mercy. i mean, i may as well have adopted the jessie-cut for what this is worth! i clearly said "just a little shorter on top." anyway, all of this hullabaloo is just bringing me that much closer to darin's "go big" idea. just wait, you'll see.

#

i don't want it to seem like i've spent the weekend sitting on my ass, so until i get on the ball enough to post new pics, here are the last of the old ones. (the whole archive of summer photos is on the images page)
once again, comments are welcome below.

ad-free instant messenger? i'm in! oh wait, it's a pc only solution. well windows folks, everyone say thanks, jessie.

"I'm a beverage guy," says Derek Dodge, Vice President of National Accounts. "In the beverage business, it's either in your blood or it's not. It's such a competitive industry that it just consumes you."

derek dodge is my new hero. he works for Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up, makers of fine carbonated beverages such as Dr. Pepper and 7-Up, among others. (favorite quote from the Dr. Pepper website? "the most misunderstood softdrink")

also in the DPSU lineup of brands is my personal fav, cactus cooler. it's the world's greatest orange-pineapple drink ever made. what beverage from your childhood do you miss most?

#

i took a fun trip to santa barbara yesterday. lots of pictures. they'll be up very soon, as will the rest of my summer pictures.

#

there you have it. proof that the world is going to hell. on a sunday, no less. well, there are other things happening right here at my home, and we don't have tv news, so i'm sure the gravity wont be real for a while.

today is thom yorke's 33rd birthday! happy birthday thom! gift giving types will make donations to nothing to fear.

 10.05.01

now that i have a new camera, i really need to start clearing out the backlog of photos from this summer. with that in mind, here's some images taken from around san francisco. expect the pics to come fast and furious for a while. let me know what you think (if what you think is good!)

#

with the digital camera come the joys of instant gratification. here are six pictures from today. they're split into two columns. one has pictures of boys i saw today, including the first published photo of philosophy boy. the other has pictures of nouns i saw today. see? it says so, right there on top.

BOYS
NOUNS

so this morning, i'm running late for class and i'm just out the door when this car pulls up next to me. an older fellow leans out the window and asks if i'm a poly student. hesitant, i reply in the affirmative. suddenly he insists i accept a ride to campus. now, mama always said not to get into stranger's cars, but mama never mentioned being late for Pricing/Estimating. so i got in. turns out he lives in my apartment complex, has for two years. majoring in chemistry. in the end, i got to school on time and made a new friend. who knew risking your life could be such a positive?

last night's west wing was much more of a play than it was a tv show. it didn't have the typical cinematic style that the show uses, but the flavor was all there. this article at cnn gives a pretty good idea what was going on and how they did it so well.

#

excitement abounds! just today i got the replacement for my defective memory card, meaning that i can finally start using my new camera. the first shots off are of my newly replanted bathroom garden and of my roommate alex being goofy.

#

against my better judgment, i went out with some friends last monday to our local dance club. monday is 80's night, which equates with queer dance party. of course it's not much of one, especially after a summer in san francisco. nevertheless, i had a pretty good time, and got to spend some time with some friends of mine. i really enjoyed hanging out with my single, cute pal byron. did i mention that he's single? he's a real sweetie boys - anyone on the central coast?

having been recently inspired by jessie, i'm considering a regular gym routine (it's free on campus, not like i'll see that price again). of course, first i should get in shape for the gym. i'm sore already.

OS X NOTES:
  • Mail just plain sucks.
  • fetch can slow the system down a bit
  • i still don't really trust classic
  • ie 5.1 wont remember my blogger login cookies
  • my first-edition ibook wakes from sleep when i close the lid. if i sleep it, then close the lid, its ok.
  • for the first time since i've owned a mac, i found myself surfing the web, playing an mp3, uploading a large file and ripping a cd all at once. slowdown? a little. stalls? none. freezes? none. joy? yes.

#

oooh! another one of those really dumb themed "activist" website days! oh, did i say dumb? i meant...filled with heartfelt sympathies.

who are we kidding? this one is to help stop "online plagiarism" - that scourge of the world! we're done with terrorist victims, aids suffferers, cancer patients and hungery children - do you part to help save the cash-flow of well fed media execs. do your part today!

so part of my strict regiment of classwork includes extensive readings in Plato. it's gotten me thinking - these ancient greeks carry an awful lot of clout in our modern world, what with that "sitting around contemplating the natures of reality and ethics" bit they do so well. but i have to stand up and ask, just how much weight can you put in the findings of a society when we don't even know how these people wiped their ass? i mean, what if it was something really humiliating involving small rocks or tree bark? if that's the case, just how smart could they have been, anyway?

#

crime statistics for my university: 697 Liquor Law arrests in the dorms. 22 counts of burglary throughout the university. most of those were backpacks. is this place real?

#

 10.01.01

hello, has anyone seen my balls around here somewhere?

#

os weirdness: os x opens my laptop's cd drive whenever i hit the f12 key (right above delete). anyone know if this can be turned off?
