08.31.01 new in sound is a the new, epic b-side to bjrk's vespertine. the track is called verandi and it's got a wonderful, huge sound to it. enjoy! # i know they'll be playing this if i go out to the clubs this weekend - its the greatest new pop sensation! BallmerFunk! # 08.30.01 ... I went up to him between sets and asked if I could work in. Not only did a purse fall out of his mouth but so did a compact, a pair of high heels, and a bottle of Nair. this one is all about how A&F has sold gay men on an image...or something. # alright, so i don't normally (read: ever) follow rumors about the real world, however it did come to my attention that the token gay male on the latest season of real world (currently being filmed in chicago) may very well be the following young man. 'nuf said.
# i want to take a second to say thanks to sentimentalement dmissionnaire ("sentimentally outgoing" i believe) for a very very sweet compliment. i'm afraid i'm going to have to learn French soon - these mediocre translations just wont cut it. # alright, i'm a convert. after a round of negotiations with those fine fellas at east/west i've decided to end my short lived campaign to narrow their blog. how could i do anything otherwise after hearing convincing arguments such as the "correlation between length and width" ? i will now hang my head in shame as i scroll sideways at east/west. # now that i've added the new east/west to my links* page, i feel it's time to launch a campaign for east/west 800x600 compatibility. as you may have noticed, the east/west blog page is simply too wide to fit on an 800x600 screen, forcing a painful "side-scroll" in order to read both east and west. let's face it folks, some of us (hey, its an older laptop, i'm a student, get off my case) are forced to toil away on a measly 800x600 (henceforth referred to as "8x6ers") screen resolution. these 8x6ers suffer enough in this modern internet, where a strong large-screen-size bias undeniably exists. so i implore you to help fight discrimination against 8x6ers today, and ask choire to put right this wrong against a helpless people. # 08.29.01 why metafilter is destined to become an American Icon: "Everthing about lesbianism appeals apart from supping on the hairy clam." # Bob Hope is ill. send him a get-well message now! # the following is an interesting segment of an otherwise mundane article. i'm saving you the hassle of trying to find the good part. (more below) "Do you remember those AT&T ads? The ones that ended with the tagline You will? You know: They were shot in this near-future utopia that was supposed to look all sleek and clean but came off -- at least from where I was sitting -- Blade Runner-esque and kind of creepy. They ran from the spring of 1993 to late 1994. TV, radio, newspapers and magazines. They won a bunch of awards. They'd start off with a voice-over, the intonation of a rhetorical question. Have you ever? And then there'd be these scenarios you never dreamed of-someone's entire grocery cart checked out all at once, a door unlocking to the sound of someone's voice, someone sending a fax from a beach. I found an old business-news article about these things that called them "soon-to-be-released technologies." (I also discovered that it was Tom Selleck who did the voice-overs. I hadn't remembered that.) And there was one, remember, a TV spot that showed someone in a phone booth, and the voice-over said: "Have you ever tucked your baby in from a payphone?" And then a pause, and then a shot of a baby sleeping contentedly somewhere else. The voice-over: "You will." Chilling. Almost Orwellian. You will. Funny thing: Turns out those ads -- the ones on TV -- were directed by David Fincher, who went on to direct Fight Club, a movie that was about destroying the companies responsible for creating clean, sleek facades, among other things. Suddenly those AT&T ads make a little more sense. The company thought they'd make everyone all weak-in-the-knees for gizmos and gimmickry, I'm sure. But maybe Fincher wanted us to be a little bit afraid." i found this at shift in this article on technology, globalization and global warming or how the big corporation is hurting the planet instead of helping it. the article itself isn't bad, but it's sort of the same story. # could someone please tell me if there is an industry / career / workplace that is not filled with bitter, cynical, pessimistic people? or is everyone everywhere just too jadded? # goodbye, henrietta pussycat. # 08.28.01 of course this sort of thing never happens to a show that i watch live? and how long will i have to wait for the taped copy of ? better yet, who will let me watch this cool show, tribal blips and all, in the next season?! (more on the strange HBO happenings here, though you'll need to register to read it) # i'm not sure, but i think i should wish mark a happy birthday. # Speaking of Mr. Jobs, the Apple boss was spotted near the Powell Street cable car turnaround last week. Standing before the BofA branch at 1 Powell St., Jobs was overheard telling colleagues that the building would be great for one of Apple's retail stores... that's where i get off the train! how did i miss this?! (scroll halfway down the page) # Short of breaking fingers or sending out squads of vengeful info-ninjas to add metadata to the average user's files, we're never gonna get there. why explicit, human-generated metadata cannot achieve our informational goals. (via blogdex) # i'm told this would go well with a nice beaver joke or two, but i just can't stomach it. (via Mr. G) # blog-based media: blogdex, blogfinder and blogdexter; are blog's poised to become the internet's first human-powered, organically structured media filter? or am i just crazy? # 08.27.01 "In a couple of months, we will be in Africa, China and Russia. There is nothing that can stop us." what these fucking bastards are doing is using fear to perpetrate a heinous fraud against a sick and dying people. the little pink pill they're calling an HIV/AIDS "immunization" is nothing more than the sickest and most low form of fraud, a tool of some very horrible people to scam those who are most desperate. those behind this "drug" are doing more than providing a sick false hope to thousands of AIDS stricken thai people. they're eroding what progress has been made to educate the people of thailand in proper prevention as well as threatening to do the same around the world. those who are distributing this pill (which has not undergone any sort of scientific testing) are leveraging fear to build a hysterical dependence on a drug which has proven to have no effect whatsoever. by doing this, they're committing a crime against desperate people who have no other option. moreover, this sort of mass hysteria could set back efforts to obtain legitimate HIV/AIDS anti-retroviral treatments for the poor, either from western pharmaceutical companies or through the development of generic treatments. perhaps this most sickening is what those who take the pill will think when they see those around them continue to die and they begin to realize the magnitude of what has been done to them. what these people are doing in thailand is a crime. please support causes that will make a difference. # judging by the ringling train cars lined up in the rail yard on my way to work this morning, it would appear that the circus is coming to town. before you go, learn the truth. # ever since streaming media was born, i've been waiting for the day that i can use this amazing technology to listen to live broadcasts from Amsterdam Police Radio. # 08.26.01 adventures in bear country: the boyfriend and i decided to take a little unplanned driving vacation yesterday, so we packed some bags, retrieved the car and headed north. recalling my parents tales of their (erm..) romantic camping honeymoon (erm..) traveling along the russian river, we decided to check out this scenic river vista. what we discovered was that, unbeknownst to my parents, in the years following their travels (and my conception? who knows!) the sleepy city of Guerneville had grown to become a gay meca. including, nightlife such as a dance club, a cruise bar, a leather bar, a "scenic nightime nature trail" (which we did not partake in) a chamber of comerce sponsored "pajama party" and of course, a resort known as fifes. fifes, we discovered, is more than a gay-friendly camping spot, including many cabins, a pool, many wandering, dark, night trails, a well manicured lawn in the woods (for pitching a tent, of course) and finally, in the middle of the woods, a "bunkhouse" featuring drinks, music and dancing. with djs. and club lighting. and of course, lots and lots of old(er) gentlemen. of course we couldn't stay in this quaint queer haven, due in part to the median age of the gentlemen, and the median lack of vacancies. we did however, manage to enjoy a wonderful dinner, including a lovely jazz trio. and we made some (albeit strange) new friends. so next time you're looking for a gay-getaway from the hustle and bustle of your city, try the gay russian river. # "survey data from submarines, discos, and prisons show that anywhere from 9 to 23 percent of males say they have a desire to become gay..." a very funny bit of satire from slate, of all places (via your friendly neighborhood stalker) # 08.25.01 ohmygod! my pyramid song promo got mentioned on the fabulous air-radiohead.com! but it's in french! what does it say?! um, erm, what can i say? "bienvenus amant de radiohead!!" (i think...) # 08.24.01 a few random photo's have been posted over at contrasts. including this photo of jessie and i with his really cool friend's christian and ricky. aren't they cute? # updated the links* page to include my new internet superstar. wil wheaton. in related news, we're hard at work here at prosaic* on version 2.0 of this handy website. thanks to some supreme efforts on the part of mr. jessie, the framework code is in development. (i say this mainly because somebody saved my ass when i designed something too complex to code myself.) we're not rushing to launch prosaic* [2.0] so don't get too anxious. perhaps within the next two weeks or so? don't hold me to it. # and in the spirit of wil wheaton's coming out, i offer you all the funnest queer resource guide, "I Think I'm A Lesbian." of course it's for boys too. and it includes the ultra handy straight person's guide to gay etiquette, a brilliant text for any of you straight folks who are worried that you may be come out to at any time. and for the out-comers as well! oh yeah, and it's funny. (p.s. wil wheaton is not gay. he's really not gay, and he's married. please don't sue me, wil wheaton. i had a crush on you!) # ladies and gentlemen! the prosaic* site of the moment: (via metafilter) # 08.23.01 saw the deep end tonight. i found it to be really quite amazing. i'll admit, there were moments where i wanted to laugh, including (but not limited to) a scene in which Tilda Swinton asks Goran Visnjic if he can help perform first aid (the stunningly hansome Mr. Visnjic plays a doctor on ER). regardless, this movie is very well done and quite satisfying (and i'm not the only one who thinks so). so much thought went into this film, so many subtle details are crafted into the undercurrent of it (notice the water theme), and it plays out beautifully. perhaps however, the most powerful thing about this movie is what it says (or rather, doesn't say) about the relationship between a young man (a young gay man? does this extend to other boys?) and our mothers. in the movie's most powerful moment, the young gay son (obviously in the midst of coming out, though this is not the film's focus) says to his mother "i don't need to know" (correct me on that if i'm wrong). and that's really it, isn't it? for so many of us, that defines the relationship with our mothers. the realization by mother and son that they indeed love one-another unconditionally. despite the details, the minutia of the everyday lives we have chosen to lead. and that we would do anything for each other. in some unspoken arrangement, we agree that we simply don't need to know. and it's then that we can fully accept oneanother. can you follow that? # 08.22.01 it sounds like jessie's in a bit of a blogging slump. go and cheer him up. (unless you got here via his links, which, apparently, 34% of you did) # everyone should know already, but noah is amazing. stop what you're doing and take a moment to look at his work. your day will be better from it. # the best radiohead article i've read in a very long time is online right now at the new yorker. # "post-straight" men, from the village voice: ...these men see gays as people to be emulated rather than shunned. And they no longer accept their straightness exactly as it was handed to them. It's not their sexuality that post-straight men have come to question, but the identity that goes with it. They are experiencing gay liberation - without the gay part. although this article seems to be confusing "vain" and "consumerism" with gay, i find that the general concept is fairly true. many of my male friends are straight, and many of them fall outside of the stereotypical-male catagory. the important thing to note though is that they fall outside of the stereotypical-gay catagory as well. straight men may find that gay men are more accepting and welcoming, but gay men may find these "post-straight" men to be less judgmental and vain. that kind of post-straight/post-gay culture, i can proudly report, is very much alive and well outside of the major metropolitan areas this article talks about. though you're hard pressed to find a frat boy wearing prada, i think straight guys are starting to realize that comming out is about a lot more than sleeping with men. (this article is everywhere, so it's hard to link-back the source.) # mark's back! not that...erm...i have a crush on him or anything. really. i swear. # 08.21.01 how do i get to the top of the results list for "fantasy sex blow job tongiht" and "largers porn in the world" please? somebody?! # difficult. addictive. unsatisfying. 3d pong. (via metafilter) # from the chronicle: In response to Jane magazine's invitation to be included in a story on "natural beauty," Dolly Parton's assistant declined, adding, "Ms. Parton also wanted me to let you know that she is definitely not a natural beauty and would not want to be photographed as one." that's diva, ain't it? # i love working in a manufacturing plant. i'm sitting at work and it's suddenly dead-quiet. all of the equipment is shut down. nobody is talking in the workroom. all i can hear is the hum of the printers next to me and the faint thudding of keystrokes at a computer. an hour later there's so much activity the bathroom sink is rattling against the wall. # 08.20.01 another reason why google rocks the search engine. with a little help from the bloggers. (via blogdex - have you added your blog?)
# let's all take a moment to dwell on this, shall we? # 08.18.01 apparently my spot is portland, oregon. huh. # i don't usually read the onion but this interview is pretty entertaining. esp. for saturday morning. # 08.17.01 i think philo's take on the latest research about oral sex and HIV transmission may be a little optimistic ("blow jobs are healthy!"). nevertheless, it's quite a positive thing to hear, and even better to see someone actually researching it finally. # 08.16.01 so i've been bouncing email's to people for a while now, and it just occured to me to check out what's going on with my free email forwarding. of course, these are dark days and lo! behold what i find at bigfoot.com, purveyor of that handy "bigfoot-for-life" email forwarding address i've passed around for years. turns out i can get only a limited number of messages a day for free, otherwise i have to upgrade to their pay service. the long and the short of it is, please be sure to send your emails to chris@prosaic.nu instead of street3r@bigfoot.com #
oh me oh my! the pyramid song promo gets a mention over at climbing up the walls! i don't know what to say but a great big "thanks!" oh yeah, and "welcome!" # 08.15.01 alright, i'd like to take a moment to climb on my little soapbox here (it is my site, isn't it?) and rant. if you're viewing this site in netscape, can i just ask you why?! i mean please, really? my respect for the grand dame of web browsers has been in a state of gradual decline for a while now, but i've always sort of held on to the fleeting desire to see a great non-microsoft product. (there *are* a number of those, don't get me wrong) i faithfully downloaded netscape 6 when it arrived, because it was the "new" netscape, the savior, the hallmark. we all know where that went. or at least someone who was able to get the damned thing to even launch on their computer knew where that went. not i. so i stopped using my old copy of communicator 4.7, in the hopes that i could remember it as it once was. but then a faithful viewer brought to my attention the fact that netscape can't quite seem to handle inline graphics inside of css content. what? (this may make no sense - it makes very little to me) either way, it's a crap thing for a browser to pull. i mean, we're talking about inline images. this isn't rocket medicine here, i'm not asking to go to the moon. so to make a short story quite long, i just spent an hour or so rooting out any inline graphics in my blog or throughout the site and putting them in a table. if you use netscape and you come across anything wacky that i've missed, please let me know. and go get a real browser. # oooh, oooh! does anyone want to go see pj harvey at the warfield with me? tickets are on sale now! c'mon, who wants to go? # blogdex: blogdex is a system built to harness the power of personal news, amalgamating and organizing personal news content into one navigable source, moving democratic media to the masses. # our friends over at 8 legged dj are a "blog of note" at blogger for aug. 2, and it's little wonder, with such wonderful posts. congrats aaron, you're my fish sticks every day. #
does this make me a creepy older guy? i found this tasty little treat while i was out last week. he'll be a lady-killer (or something...) someday soon, wont he? # 08.14.01 a slight illness may have knocked me off my feet, but it couldn't knock me off the computer. by (semi-)popular demand, i' ve updated the image* page with a new section of photos of myself that were taken after the reagan administration (well, most anyway). # 08.13.01 can any bjork fan tell me if this is all of her videos? either way, it's quite a find... #
i'm promoting the pyramid song video i created a while back and there's lots of great radiohead downloads to back it up. follow the image above to find out what's available, and think about grabing one of these fun banners to help me promote this stuff. # 08.11.01 listen to the greatest college radio station ever, kcpr, live online. (via fumbling) # 08.10.01 today is a good day: *old chinese woman humming in line at the bank *waitress at lunch gives me a flower *smells sweetly of melon, reminds me of my grandma *very hot 20-something skater boy (good body, tank top, cute pants) brushes past me out the door from lunch *my boy comes home today! # hey, look at that! my adorable, fun-loving roommate dayv has a website now! and it's got some really rad navigation images (tho i'll put up a fight over that shade of brown...). and he even has his own blog, which i think he's calling an ecstasy of fumbling, and which i will refer to from here on as "fumbling." my favorite part, you ask? why, who wouldn't love to hear dayv say "my ass was sooooo sore for a week afterward," huh? # wont you help ernie? # so i had this really strange dream last night. it's a recurring dream, in that i've had it once before and it followed the same details exactly. the strangest part is how epic it is. this dream covers, in disturbing detail, a three year span. and the story (which i will spare you all) includes a rise to power, a betrayal, murder, pain, a descent into seclusion and finally the pittying depths of rage and maddness. helluva thing to wake up from. # someone i didn't even know has said some really sweet things. let's all pay her a visit, ok? # 08.09.01 hello, have i been asleep? when was east/west outed? i mean, suddenly they have a domain, real names (like, they were using pseudonyms?) pictures (cute) and "flip" was the puppetmaster?! wow. (and, for the record, i eat cheese sandwiches) # peter makes a good point about the nature of our relationship with hairdressers. i admit, i really enjoy getting a haircut. i don't always enjoy the exchange with the stylist, but i love the feeling of having your hair cut. someone running their hands through your hair, tug tug, snip, tug, snip, comb. in the hierarchy of tactile sensations, i place the haircut towards the top. # 08.08.01 ah yes, izzy makes a good point but fails to point out how cute the well-dressed young doormen are every day. mmm. snacky. # 08.07.01 argh! it's almost 11pm on a tuesday and i am sooooo bored! i want to go out! but where would i go, and with whom? damnit... ...hey, simpson's are on in 20 minutes! # "no, but, um, Steve [Mason, lead singer for Beta Band] and Thom Yorke go back quite a long way. i mean Steve's not queer but he's bisexual and Thom was a bit confused about what he was doing for awhile before he met his current wife, so for about six months they had an on-and-off relationship. That was about four, five years ago now." (from an interview for the montreal mirror) um...so it's not news that Steve Mason is playing both sides of the fence...but Thom? our lovely Thom has slept with a man and it wasn't me? damnit. of course, I don't feel 100% behind this one...the big potential tipoff is that (i think) Thom's girlfriend is not his wife. hmmmm.... # 08.06.01 for those radiohead fans with broadband connections, check out some great concert video footage. # your tiny hands, your crazy kidding smile if you're not peter and you actually like radiohead, you'll find a lot of great mp3s in the multimedia archive at at ease, including a bootleg of the GREAT new b-side cuttooth, which may be my favorite radiohead song of all time. other yummy delights inlcude a bootleg of the sweet sweet true love waits recorded live at santa barbara (i swear i was like two rows from the guy who took this recording). of course, you can find the live cover of neil young's cinnamon girl right here on prosaic. # um, gee, i think there's a compliment in there...nope, maybe not. :) all things considered however, despite his apparent disbelief, i enjoy crush.uprush.org quite a bit. what's not to love about a musical, cute boy who is really into ani? oh, he hates radiohead...oh. where'd i put that links page... # 08.05.01 you know, this article completely misses the point. it's about people who collect AOL discs (the free ones that come in your frosted flakes). in and of itself, this is a stupid idea. these people are just geeky stamp collectors. what the author fails to even address is the rational behind collecting. many, many people collect things (stamps, posters, post-cards, artwork, boyfriends) and AOL discs is no more than a lame alternative. what would be interesting would be an article that uses this generally banal group of collectors as a springboard into the broader topic of the human-packrat syndrome: our desire to collect things, if for no other reason than to chase after them. that said, what do you collect? # finally got to meet up with mark this friday. had a really good time, despite the afternoon's sidebar of my dear mother getting nearly stranded in oakland by amtrak (link widthheld out of spite). # wow, interesting new design at 8legged. its much easier on the eyes than the last design. color me impressed! # "One day a chubby youngster walked into Wian's now flourishing restaurant. 'He was about six,' Bob recalled, 'and rolls of fat protruded where his shirt and pants were designed to meet. I was so amused by the youngster - jolly, healthy looking and obviously a lover of good things to eat, I called him Big Boy." and thus an american icon was born. git yer Big Boy news here. # from sfgate: protestant church doors starting to open for gay clergy "Attitudes about gays and lesbians have changed in the workplace, schools and other civic entities. For the church to continue to stall seems archaic and irrelevant." # 08.03.01 "how did you go bad?" posted a new radiohead mp3 - this is a b-side called fog from the soon-to-be-released single for knives out. it began life as a track called "baby alligators in new york sewers" and featured thom on acoustic (but don't they all at some point?). the studio cut is really quite interesting with some really radiohead style lyrics, or old-radiohead style lyrics I should say, such as "anything you want / it can be done" and such. pardon the messy quality of the audio - this is a bootleg after all. if you'd like a better quality dub, send me a note and i'll work on it as soon as i get my copy of the single (2-3 weeks, +/-). # 08.02.01 tileable lunchmeat background images. (via davezilla, producer of quality web projects) # whoops, heh heh, turns out it's all a joke. thanks for coming out tonight folks, everyone drive home safe. # speaking of radiohead, you can check out their new (strange) video for the single knives out at NME's website. bite sized media nuggets from prosaic* # chad bikes america. way to go chad! # apparently it's quite difficult to be a pop star these days, especially if your name is mariah carey. perhaps she should take some pointers from our friend thom. # « July 2001 | archive index | September 2001 » built with movabletype |
